Day 359: Confessions with a Concierge

June 24th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I have a story to tell you, but in order to do so I have to make two confessions. The first is that I live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The second is that, as of July, Joo and I are leaving New York and moving to Washington D.C. I haven’t owned up […]

Day 358: Obama in a New Light

June 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Recently I headed to Williamsburg in Brooklyn to see an exhibit by Joe Mangrum, an artist friend who creates fantastic visions from everyday things. He and I moved from San Francisco about the same time. Joe unlocked the door of Chi Contemporary Fine Art and showed me around just after the place closed for the […]

Day 331: Jack Goes Boating

May 15th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I knew something was up when I biked by The Lake in Central Park and saw no fewer than ten rowboats afloat, each carrying exactly one man and one woman. And all the lovers were white. How strange. Also, what sort of romantic spark causes people to paddle out on a chilly, overcast Monday at […]

Day 314: Will the Trees Take Manhattan?

April 28th, 2009 · No Comments

The battle for New York City’s green future arrived in my mailbox last week. It took the form of a fundraising appeal from MillionTreesNYC, a campaign to plant 100,000 trees every year for a decade, and bore the signature of that eminent environmentalist, Bette Midler. Which immediately brought questions to mind. Who made the star […]

Day 271: A Free Poem on Union Square

March 26th, 2009 · No Comments

In March the Union Square farmer’s market is a meager proposition: onions, potatoes, and some apples. I spent a more fruitful time having a guy write me a poem. “What do you want your poem to be about?” Benyomin Spaner asked.

Day 257: A Man with a Cat on His Head

March 12th, 2009 · 5 Comments

This man’s name is Charlie and the cat’s name is Nicolas. Some Union Square panhandlers just ask for change, but the more enterprising ones have a value-add. Charlie created value by adding Nicholas to the top of his head. The combination coaxed three dollars out of me. I think Charlie is on to something.

Day 240: Brazilian TV Meets the American Writer

February 23rd, 2009 · 1 Comment

The announcement appeared on the refrigerator: “A Brazilian Television Show Is Here at 2 p.m. Today to Do a Segment on Paragraph. Anyone Interested in Being Interviewed, Tell Lila.” The Brazilians didn’t arrive until three, I observed as I pretended to read a book in the corner of the lunchroom. They bustled in fresh and […]

Day 223: The Smallest Appointment

February 6th, 2009 · 2 Comments

I am concerned that President Obama has passed two and half weeks in office already, distracting himself with Economic-Stimulus-This and Closing-Guantanamo-That, while one of the hairiest questions of his presidency hangs fire: who will be our First Dog? You’ll recall that, in the misty-eyed moments after he won the election, Obama walked onto the stage […]

Day 171: A Joo-ish Christmas

December 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The tree has been standing unadorned in my living room for the last two weeks, and when my partner Joo visits me she looks at it suspiciously. It makes her sneeze. Joo is a Hindu, half-allergic to Christmas and fully allergic to pollen. “OK, OK, OK, I’ll help you decorate it,” she said yesterday, sniffling, […]

Day 115: Whew! A Nephew

October 22nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

You’re probably wondering what I’ve been up to in the three weeks I’ve been gone. The hands-down most important event was the birth of my new nephew, Quinn William Sears. He was born Oct. 3 to my sister Susan, a few weeks early. Both he and his mom are healthy. Susan is my only sibling […]
