Day 141: Can The Today Show Be Trusted?

November 17th · 4 Comments

Of all the genres on television, the one I dislike most might be the early-morning news show. It goes beyond the shallow banter and the insipid theme music and down to an issue of trust: How can I believe anybody who is that chipper and talkative at seven in the morning?

Nevertheless, there I was, rolling out of bed at 5:15 a.m. on Friday to attend a taping of The Today Show with my buddy Les. Les is visiting from California and is a gentleman with many fine qualities, except his naming of The Today Show as the #1 thing he wanted to see in New York. We headed off for Midtown with visions of ourselves immortalized on the small screen.

We arrived at Rockefeller Center early and peeped through the studio window and see Tyra Banks, her shapely legs crossed, taping an interview with Matt Lauer. Hmmm, my blood seemed to be moving faster already.

Then at 6:50 a.m., with 10 minutes to showtime, the TV monitors over the square lit up with Amy Robach, the stand-in anchor, as the hair and makeup people sprayed and dabbed her. Seeing that made me feel a little better. It confirmed my suspicion that such cheerfulness is only possible when one is supported by a small army of caffeinated underlings.

As the show began and the crowd of onlookers collected against the barriers, we watched a veritable pageant of American celebrity pass by in the square and in the studio: Jon Corzine, the governor of New Jersey, then the Asian guy from “Heroes”, then a live performance of a love song by Enrique Iglesias, and then the Christmas tree rolled into Rockefeller Center with Al Roker waving from the flatbed like the homecoming queen on a float.

At this point, just when it seemed our starry visit couldn’t get any more studded, the Radio City Rockettes walked right by us, dressed up like tightly-wrapped Christmas presents and with legs as long as Fifth Avenue.

I have to admit I enjoyed watching the Today Show live, and then going home and replaying the split second that Les and I appeared on screen at exactly 7:30 a.m.

Even more importantly, I may have discovered why the anchors act so happy. It might just be that they actually are happy. Every time they glanced at the audience, or gave something resembling a wave, few dozen people hollered at them in adulation.

Okay. I could see getting up early in the morning for that.

You know, I thought she looked familiar. I can’t tell, though, whether it’s her or just a look-alike.

I was like, “No way dude, Ugly Betty!”
and she was like “I’m so Not!”
and I was like “You sure?”
and her boyfriend was like “Hey dude!”
and I was like “It’s cool, you’re both ugly.”
then I was like “Bueller, help me up…”
