Day 219: That’s Disc-gusting

February 2nd · 2 Comments

To mark Super Bowl Sunday, I joined some fellow writers for a game of ultimate Frisbee at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. We met in the big meadow under a weak sun. The grass was dead, with just a few patches of snow, and we dashed around for two hours like Labrador retrievers. We mixed the dirt and slush into a fine bouquet of mud.

We came to play Frisbee, as John Madden might say, and if John wasn’t already announcing at the Super Bowl he would have added that we gave it 110 percent. At first we skidded in the mud just on the valiant dives into the end zone. Then things got slipperier and we started crashing midfield. By the end one could fall ass backward, stepping-on-a-banana-peel style, just by thinking about it.

When it was all over I brought some of Prospect Park home on my clothes, as you can see.

(Note: if you want to have several seats to yourself on a crowded subway car, arrive in muddy pants. Works every time.)

Is that your Heisman pose, or “I gotta pee”?

Have you ever thought that maybe that Heisman guy had to pee too? Huh? Have ya?
