Day 338: Virgin No More

June 3rd · No Comments

img_7645When the economy imploded last fall, one of the first victims was the Circuit City on Union Square. It was the first I saw to post “Going out of Business” signs and invite the hordes to vulture up its merchandise. (Thanks for the new home phone, guys.)

After the last Monster stereo cables were sold and the last pre-owned flatscreen TV was pawned, after the display cases and even the light fixtures had been hauled away, what remained was a sad sight: A floor littered with wrappers and crud that no one would ever vacuum, and a silent escalator that ascended into darkness. It reminded passers-by that the economy was so bad that no store – not even an electronics store surrounded by an ocean of NYU and New School students – could survive.

The vultures have descended again as two entire floors of Joe Satriani and Limp Bizkit and MC Hammer go for 30 percent off, no returns. When the store closes its doors, an entire block on the corner of Union Square will be without a tenant on the ground floor.
