Day 37: Pushing the Fashion Envelope

August 2nd · 6 Comments

As we watched the waves from Rodeo Beach a few months ago in California, one of my buddies told me about his visit he’ d made to New York for Fashion Week. “You know what’s coming in?” he asked.

“Bright colors. The eighties. They’re coming back. Just wait and see.”

Today, chastised by last night’s sartorial shame, I went clothes shopping near Union Square under the skilled eye of my friend Jen. I had aimed for the thrift stores but Jen was thinking more of Barney’s Coop, one of those super-fancy fashion outlets I never would visit on my own. On a shelf by the black dress jackets, there they were!

Pants in brilliant yellow, blue and red, colors enthusiastic like a national flag, colors so bright they looked like they required a battery pack. I rubbed a thumb against the buttery cloth.

In the dressing room I tried a pair, the yellow ones. I got them on, though I had to hop up and down a few times to get them actually up and around my waist. I looked in the mirror doubtfully. They looked…different. Moved-to-a-new-city-and-need-a-new-look kind of different.

I minced out of the dressing room with tiny steps to the review of Jen and the Barney’s guy, whose vest and jeans were only slightly less tight than mine. I expected them to laugh.

“Hmmmm!” Jen nodded. “Could be good.”

“You need a size bigger,” said tight-jeans man.

This time it was the blue. They practically lit the room on their own, these pants, and in spite of myself I really liked them. I imagined sweaty scenes on a dance floor, disco-ball swinging.

And I might have actually taken the plunge if it wasn’t for the $275 price tag. Jen recommended I keep an eye out at the Gap or Banana Republic and wait for the day, a season or two from now, when Barney’s fashions migrate down to the masses. I found myself hoping that these trousers would end up on the $40 rack without having lost its saturated color or style.

You in Barneys Co-Op? This is akin to me hanging out at Big Earl’s Bait & Tackle.
Thanks for the photos. I laughed so hard I nearly snorked my latte. Startled man at Starbucks moved away quickly.
