Day 42: The World of Mad

August 7th · 1 Comment

My friend Dane Golden is in town from San Francisco and wrangled us a tour of the offices of Mad magazine, the publication that was honing satire to a lethal edge years before Stephen Colbert and the editors of The Onion were even born.

The office is in a glitzy tower on Broadway near Times Square, just across the street from the theater where David Letterman does his show. Our guide was none other than Dick DeBartolo, whose has written for every issue of the magazine since Lyndon Johnson was president.

None of this did I know before I sat to write this post; the last time I flipped through MAD was at the orthodontist’s office in 1977. Walking along the wall of framed covers, though, I chortled at parodies of everybody from Barry Bonds to Demi Moore and George Washington to Dick Cheney. I saw how many celebrities have been cut to the quick and how many chuckles I have been denying myself.

And I got an advance copy of the next issue. (Barack Obama as the 40-Year-Old Virgin!)

Fans of Mad, or of the art of satire, will enjoy this video of Dick’s showing us around the office. Kick back and enjoy.
