Day 61: The Fashionista’s Toolbox

August 26th · No Comments

I was gazing out Nima’s window high above Union Square when she made an offer that turned my head. “Do you need an armoire? My roommate’s getting rid of hers,” she said. Nima, a corporate lawyer, was taping boxes shut in preparation for the diaspora of her post-collegiate apartment.

I looked over at Joo, who is Nima’s cousin, and we nodded to each other. Can’t pass this one up.

The armoire is an insta-closet of new storage space for the squeezed apartment dweller. Even sweeter, this one had a mirrored door, which made it appear far smaller than it actually was. But how to move a giant mirrored box seven feet high across town?

I am savvy enough now from my furniture adventures to know I would have to take the whole thing apart and feed it piece by piece in a minivan taxi. What IKEA can build I can pull apart.

“Do you have a screwdriver?” I asked Nima.

“Sure thing,” she volunteered as she folded a cashmere Juicy Couture tracksuit. “It’s in the Prada box.”

Sure enough, the hammer, the Phillips screwdriver and the standard screwdriver had moved into an uptown address embossed with black. They did the trick. However, I bet these working-class tools will never be as provocative, or upwardly mobile, as the shoes that occupied the box in the first place.
