Day 63: Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out

August 28th · 4 Comments

I’ve been waiting for months to be liberated from my Verizon contract so I could nab an iPhone. Today, free at last, I headed to one of Manhattan’s three Apple stores for my own sexy, life-changing piece of hand candy, which immediately changed my life in a way I didn’t expect.

The Fifth Avenue Apple Store is a glistening cube near the edge of Central Park that has had a line of customers out the door since the new iPhone was released in mid-July. No line today, though, and I walked down the crystalline spiral staircase into a crowd large enough for an Irish bar on St. Patrick’s Day.

It’s like they were giving away free coolness injections – oh, wait, they are.

In no time I found myself in the care of Glynda, a sales associate in the signature blue t-shirt. As she input my data into a Pocket PC she mentioned the store was open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“Are there people here at four in the morning?” I asked.

“Oh, yeah,” she said. “They may not be buying, but they’re here.”

“How about Christmas?”

“That’s when we get a lot of Jews.”

In no time the deed was done. On the M57 crosstown bus, I bent over my new toy, trying to pull up speeches from the Democratic convention on YouTube. Usually the crosstown ride is painfully slow but tonight I got to my stop before I knew it.

Slow, tedious bus rides are the times I look out the window to glean a new odd thing about New York – a guy in a cape dancing backward on rollerblades, say, or a dog-walker barely governing his Labradors. Not today. Today I missed the whole thing.

I’d better put myself on a restricted iPhone diet, or my experience of New York’s grand pageant – and yours, dear reader – could be eaten by a magic screen 2.4 inches wide.

    Hi David
Greetings from Mt. Meadow friends. Any yoga in central park?? We’ve been meaning to read your adventures for awhile but just got to it. Fun to read. We will keep better track of you. 🙂

Oh no! You’ve been sucked into the dark side. Evil empire still entices, I see. Mara wants an iPod. By that, I think she means an MP3 player. At least, I hope! Hope to postpone buying an Apple product until I die. I know what awaits me in heaven. God likes cool devices, I bet.
Joo. iPhone has a software kill switch. Here’s what you do…
